Data Visualization that Captures the Emotional Cost of Work

Overview

This data visualization project was created during the November 2024 edition of Future Fridays, a collaborative design sprint hosted by Infogr8 in partnership with the Data Visualization Society. The sprint challenged participants to creatively interpret data from the Gallup State of the Global Workforce Report and tell emotionally resonant stories about the modern work experience—particularly the elusive goal of work-life balance.

Over the course of four sessions, we explored the data set, developed story-driven concepts, and pushed the boundaries of traditional infographic design.

Behind the Design

The goal of this data visualization project was to create an emotionally resonant portrait of the global workforce using metaphor and visual storytelling

One of the key challenges was finding a way to visualize emotionally charged metrics—such as stress, anger, sadness, and loneliness—in a manner that was both clear and impactful. It was equally important to translate abstract workplace concepts like struggling and not engaged into visual metaphors that were intuitive without oversimplifying the underlying data. I also wanted the final visualization to engage viewers’ curiosity—encouraging reflection, not just comprehension—while maintaining accuracy and accessibility.

My approach began with structured data exploration. To ground the visual metaphor in accurate proportions, I used Flourish to build three exploratory graphs:

  • A bar graph plotting intent to leave per region on a vertical axis (used as a spatial guide for ship placement)
  • A double bar graph to determine the relative height of each rocket’s thrusters (representing struggling and not engaged percentages)
  • A bubble chart to calculate and visualize the size of each ship’s circular “windows” (representing the emotional states)

Armed with this data scaffolding, I moved to the sketching phase. On my iPad, I explored visual metaphors and layouts that could communicate the data story in a way that felt both playful and serious. The idea of spaceships launching upward—representing the rising desire to leave one’s job—quickly resonated as a visual metaphor for escape, disconnection, and aspiration.

In the final poster, each spaceship represents one world region. Its vertical position reflects the percentage of workers intending to leave; its thruster heights show the prevalence of struggling and disengaged employees; and its circular windows reveal the daily emotional toll—stress, anger, sadness, and loneliness.

A carefully crafted vintage-retro aesthetic reinforces the emotional tone. The distressed textures and nostalgic palette evoke a bygone vision of the future—underscoring the disconnect between modern work ideals and lived reality.

Deliverables

  • 1 fully rendered data visualization poster
  • Optimized for both print and digital use
  • Shared via Infogr8 and the Data Visualization Society platforms

Results

  • The visual was featured and praised by peers in the Data Visualization Society Slack and showcase
  • Recognized for its creative storytelling approach and effective use of metaphor
  • Expanded my personal portfolio with a conceptual infographic rooted in both design and emotional insight
