Logo Design Inspired by NASA's Graphic Heritage
Overview
The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory branding project was a unique opportunity to design for a site of historic scientific importance. This hidden gem in Maryland helped track the Earth’s wobble as part of a global effort to measure latitude changes. Operated today by the Gaithersburg Community Museum, the observatory draws interest from curious locals, students, and tourists alike.
As the site gained visibility through museum programming and a popular gift shop, the need emerged for a compelling visual identity—one that could represent the Observatory across merchandise, signage, and public-facing materials. They turned to me to develop a logo and branding system for the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory that brought its rich legacy to life through design that felt historic, cosmic, and versatile.
I was responsible for the logo design, brand style guide, and branded applications for the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory branding project. My goal was to create a visual identity that could bridge science and storytelling—something that would honor the site’s role in space research while inspiring a new generation of skywatchers.
Design Concept
Inspired by classic NASA patches, the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory branding captures the wonder of astronomy and the precision of historic scientific research. The circular design anchors the identity—just like the Earth’s axis.
At its center is a stylized illustration of the observatory’s distinctive façade, simplified to echo the timeless clarity of vintage space graphics. Arched around the top edge is the Observatory’s name, while “39° 8′ N”—its original latitude coordinate—grounds the design with a sense of place. A field of stars and a crescent moon adds a celestial mood, while the background evokes deep space in rich midnight tones.
The color palette brings both science and storytelling to life:
- Golden bronze for the type, celestial accents, and façade elements, suggesting aged instruments and timelessness.
- Jungle green woven through the building lines as a subtle nod to the aurora borealis and natural light phenomena.
- Navy blue and deep space black for the sky, grounding the composition in its cosmic inspiration.
The result is a logo that feels both vintage and modern, inviting and iconic—ready for any surface from t-shirts to telescope cases.
Challenges
Without an existing visual identity, the Observatory needed a design that could instantly capture attention and translate well across formats—from large signage to small enamel pins. The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory branding also had to appeal to a wide range of audiences, from science-curious kids to local history buffs. That meant balancing clarity, intrigue, and universal appeal.
Another key challenge was ensuring the design could carry meaning even without additional context—making it feel souvenir-worthy at first glance, while still holding deeper symbolism for those who looked closer.
Solutions
To meet these goals, I designed a logo that functions as both a badge and a brand mark, leveraging circular symmetry and strong contrasts for high visibility. I created a brand guide that outlined usage, color codes, and application examples across formats. The final design is detailed enough to reward close inspection, yet clean enough to work in a single color—ensuring adaptability across the entire Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory branding system.
