Design Meets Dogs (a Cat, a Bunny and a Plant): A Lighthearted Campaign for a Serious Design Audience

Overview

As Communications Director for AIGA DC, I developed a lighthearted but strategic graphic design social media campaign to celebrate National Pet Day. The concept was simple but effective: feature board members’ pets and match each one with a graphic design style and Pantone color that reflected their unique personality.

Over three days, we introduced our creative community to twelve beloved companions—including dogs, a cat, a bunny, a fish, and even a very photogenic houseplant. Each post followed a consistent structure that designers would love: a visual identity, a personality profile, a Pantone match, and a bold caption written in the voice of our AIGA DC team. This campaign turned a simple holiday into one of our most successful moments of the year.

Responsibility

I led the campaign from concept through execution. That included creating the graphic design system, writing and editing captions, designing each post, and coordinating content submissions from board members. I also managed scheduling across platforms and tracked engagement analytics to guide future strategies.

Challenges

Designing for National Pet Day may seem casual, but the stakes were high. AIGA’s audience is filled with working designers, so visuals needed to be polished and intentional. I had to work with a mix of user-submitted pet photos, each with different lighting and resolution. The challenge was to create a graphic design social media series that felt cohesive and professional while still letting each pet’s personality shine.

Collecting content was another hurdle. Our board is made up of busy volunteers, and asking them to submit pet photos and write creative copy took time. To make it easier and more fun, I turned our monthly board meeting icebreaker into a FigJam activity called “Share Your Pet.” In just 20 minutes, I had everything I needed. The activity itself became a highlight. People shared sweet anecdotes, laughed about their pets’ quirks, and brought real heart into the virtual Zoom meeting. That warmth came through in the final campaign, and I believe it’s part of why it resonated so well.

Design Concept & Message

This campaign was all about storytelling through design. Each post introduced a pet with a color tile inspired by Pantone, a favorite toy and treat. The second graphic in each post revealed the pet’s graphic design alter ego—like Chuckles, a shaggy dog matched with the grunge style for his “gritty, distressed, and unconventional fur that grows rebellious and out of control.”

By matching design language with pet personalities, we created content that was visually engaging, deeply human, and tailored to our audience. Every post invited viewers to connect with the pets, and the people behind the organization.

Solutions

I created a consistent layout system based on the AIGA DC branding style, accommodating different kinds of content: dogs, cats, a bunny, and even a plant. Each graphic included a Pantone-style color tile, a pet profile, and a second slide describing the pet’s graphic design style. Captions were light and warm, intentionally playful while staying on-brand. I structured the campaign in three daily drops to build momentum, encourage shares, and extend reach across LinkedIn and Instagram.

Deliverables

• 3 multi-slide social media posts (LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook) and posting in stories
• Graphic system with Pantone-inspired tiles and style descriptors
• Pet personality copywriting and visual voice development
• Scheduling and post-campaign analytics tracking

Results

This was AIGA DC’s highest-performing graphic design social media campaign of the year (as of May 2024).

LinkedIn Performance (3 posts):
• 8,540 impressions | 1,328 clicks | 1,402 total engagements
• First post alone reached 7,773 impressions with 1,209 engagements

Instagram Performance:
